M S Viswanathan is no more. The baton of the composer crowned ‘Thirai Isai Chakravarthy’ has been stilled. But his music from some 1200 films for which he composed will live on forever. Here are some we never tire of listening to:

Thamizh Thai Vaazhthu

It’s the state anthem sung of Tamil Nadu. Few know that the rousing tune to which Manonmaneeyam Sundaram Pillai’s lyrics were set was composed by MSV. The song, ‘Neerarum Kadaludutha’ was declared the state song of Tamil Nadu in 1970 by Kalaingar Karunanidhi.

Thamizhukkum Amudhendru Per

This Bharathidasan poem was set to music by the Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy duo – they worked together continuously in the 1950s and ‘60s – for the film Panjavarnakkili. P Susheela’s flawless voice is as sweet as the lyrics and the music.

Iravum Nilavum Malarattume

MSV found inspiration in Hindustani classical music for this song from Karnan, in which Sivaji Ganesan played the title role. The composer also used shehnai sequences in the song.

Anbulla Maan Vizhiye

It’s most likely that anyone who romanced in the black & white era fell back at some point on this upbeat love song from the film Kuzhandhayum Deivamum. MSV keeps the lightest touch in this number.

Avalukkenna Azhagiya Mugam Avalukkenna

The picturisation of the song is special because it shows MSV conducting the orchestra. This hit song from Server Sundaram, with its jazz tones, is proof of MSV’s mastery over the western genre. MSV-Ramamoorthy used trumpets, trombones and bongos to great effect in this song.

Thottaal Poo Malarum

It was pure classical by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy in this song from Padagotti. Vaali’s sensuous lyrics add to its appeal. The lyricist has said that his success was in no small way made possible by MSV’s music.

Sindu Nadhi Misai Nilavinile

One of Bharathiyar’s most brilliant poems was brought to life in Kai Kodutha Deivam by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy. Listen to the mellifluous voice of TM Sounderajan and the flute interludes.

Engirundhalum Vaazhga

This lilting song from Nenjil Ore Aalayam captures all the pathos of unrequited love. The 1962 film by Sridhar is a classic and so is the music.

Ninaikka Therindha Maname

The compelling lyrics of Kannadasan and lyrical tune of Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy combine in this evergreen song from Ananda Jothi. Few songs about lost love are as unforgettable as this one.

Kalangalil Aval Vasantham

This romantic number from Paava Mannippu makes it to the playlist of anyone who loves old songs. P.B Srinivas at his best singing the incomparable lyrics by Kannadasan.
