If you are visiting a colonial-era jail here in Medak district of Telangana, you may also want to get a first-hand experience of prison life.

Well now that can be arranged. Of course, by paying a fee of Rs 500 for a day’s stay.

This 220-year-old district central jail at Sangareddy, has now been converted into a museum and offers a 24-hour confinement under an innovative initiative called “Feel the Jail” programme launched by the state prisons department.

People who want to spend time behind the bars (like the really desperate ones) can experience the feeling of being imprisoned in this British era jail.

What about the stay?

When in Rome be like one. Having said that, you will be treated as a prisoner only for 24 hours. During the stay (detention), inmates would be given prison uniform made of khadi, a steel plate and glass, a mug, washing and bathing soaps, bedding and other facilities.

Don’t think of luxury mate. All these facilities will only be as per the state prison manual.

And relax, there is no third degree used here and prisoners are not expected to do work for the prison. BUT, they have to clean their barracks and are free to plant saplings during their stay.

The jail was constructed during the prime ministership of Salar Jung-I in 1796 under the Nizam rule in Hyderabad.

Now that’s an easiest and probably the cheapest way to go jail .

Enjoy.
