Review Central: Bombay Velvet – Superbly styled, but lacking soul
Anurag Kashyap’s grand period piece, set in 1960s Bombay, is one of the most awaited films of the year. It’s a heady mix of street fights, boxing, jazz, romance and treachery, telling the story of Johnny Balraj, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and Rosie Noronha, played by Anushka Sharma, and how their lives intertwine in a world full of intrigue. While critics have lavished praised for the spectacle the film presents of a time gone by, many have found it more style than substance. One called it an ‘epic misfire’ and another described it as ‘cliched’.
