Review Central: Dil Dhadakne Do – A super trip or a slow crawl?

Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, with its ensemble cast, is one of the most-awaited films of the year. Starring Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Farhan Akhtar and Anushka Sharma, it tells the story of a rich, dysfunctional family facing bankruptcy who set off on a luxury cruise to shore up confidence in their status. It doesn’t seem to be the rave it was expected to be.

One critic said the film set on a cruise ship moves as slowly as a rowboat in the Pacific Ocean. Another found the central thread in itself philosophically disturbing. But some seem to have found DDD utterly entertaining. One critic said it’s a classic example of how, when a pertinent, contemporary story meets a stellar star cast and near perfect direction, it results in a wholesome film good enough to be taken home to mum.

Our take:

The ways of the rich, especially as interpreted by Bollywood, can often border on the absurd. Add to that a bunch of beautiful, dysfunctional people and you get DDD. It promises to be entertaining as long as you don’t take its premises too seriously.
