A gang of robbers cut a hole into the roof of a moving train in Tamil Nadu and stole close to Rs 6 crore.

The train carrying approximately Rs 340 crore belonging to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was on its way from Salem to Chennai. The money was being escorted with armed police sitting in the next carriage.

The police suspect that 6 to 8 robbers had made the hole using a cutting torch and managed to extract the money undetected.

Multiple agencies, including the state crime branch CID and the railway police are reportedly handling the case. It is suspected that the coach might have already been punctured using chisels and hammers when the train was stationed in Salem.

It is also suspected that an insider might been involved, as the robbers had precise knowledge of the design of the coach and had cut into the soft spot.

India Today reports that the forensic department has recovered four pairs of fingerprints and a blood sample from the crime scene.
