Students of the University of Hyderabad on Tuesday vandalized the vice chancellor Professor Appa Rao Podile’s office when he resumed work. Rao was on leave since January 24 following a protest by students over Rohith’s suicide. The incident had also catapulted into a row between the ruling BJP-led NDA government and the opposition Congress party.

Rao was under fire for the suspension of five Dalit students—Rohith Vemula was one of them. The 26-year-old scholar hanged himself in the hostel room on 17 January. The furious students had staged protests and demanded his resignation which prompted Rao to go on leave.

When Rao returned and resumed charge from the in-charge VC Periyaswamy, furious students protested and vandalized the vice chancellor’s official bungalow. They also reportedly smashed the vice chancellor’s chamber.
