In a major setback for Bollywood actor Salman Khan, a sessions court in Mumbai on Wednesday (May 6) sentenced the actor to 5 years in jail in the 2002 hit-and-run case.

Following the judgement, Salman Khan’s lawyers moved the Bombay High Court, which granted the actor a 2-day interim bail.

Salman Khan has been found guilty on all seven charges against him, including Section 304 part II of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).

In court, Additional Sessions Judge DW Deshpande said no more compensation is required to be given.

Before pronouncing the quantum of sentence, the judge told Salman Khan that it was indeed the actor himself who was behind the wheel on the night of the accident and that he was under the influence of alcohol.

Meanwhile, Salman Khan’s lawyer Shrikant Shivade mentioned Alistair Pereira and the BMW hit-and-run Sanjeev Nanda case for reduced sentence. The lawyer also pleaded for maximum sentence of 2 years and a fine, keeping in mind the actor’s humanitarian work.

Over the last 13 years, there have been several twists and turns.

One person was killed and four others were left injured on the night of September 28, 2002 after Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s Toyota Land Cruiser rammed into the American Express Bakery in Bandra, Mumbai.

Here’s a look at the key events of the high profile hit-and-run case.
