It is easy to see the dazzle of stars and politicians and fall in love with the fame and name that generally goes their way. But the real heroes are behind the veil, making no sound whatsoever, reaching every corner of the world that seeks help and justice.

On the wake of India’s 69th year of Independence, let’s find out about the special task forces of India that ensure that no corner is left to its own devices and is protected to the full:

1. National Security Guards (The Black Cats)

They are an offshoot of the Indian army and the Central Armed Police Force, and deal with urgent threats of terrorism and violence in the states. Basically they are generally the first to reach a site of major dispute. The section is called Black Cats because their uniforms are Black. The NSG is headed by an IPS officer.

2. The Para Commandos

These heroes are also a branch of the Indian Armed Forces, but their training is of a higher order meant to deal with extreme threats and wars. These brave men deal with what is termed as ‘unconventional warfare’ such as special operations, direct action, hostage rescue, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, counter-insurgency and much more. Phew that’s a lot! Hats off!

3.  The Parachute Regiment

They are the other side of the coin of the para commandos, and form the airborne section of unconventional warfare. What para commandos do on land they do on air. This is riskier since air warfare provides no security of protective trenches, pits or walls!

Another extension of the CAPF, these courageous lads keep an eye on the borders so that no crime takes place at our borders and the lines separating economies are kept intact and protected. They see to that nobody crosses boundaries!

5. MARCOS

The Marine Commando Force travel murky waters to keep maritime in the Indian water bodies safe and secure. These guys, who are a tributary of the Indian Navy, deal with unconventional warfare on waters. Want to know an interesting fact? The Marine Commandos are so formidable looking with their heavy beards that terrorists call them “Dadiwala fauj” and are very scared of them.

6. Garud Commando Force

A special task force of the Indian Air Force, they keep a watch out on threats to air bases in the nation and prevent terrorist attacks on Air Force installations. During hostilities, Garuds undertake rescue of downed airmen and other forces from behind enemy lines, suppression of enemy air defense (SEAD), missile and munitions guidance and other airborne weapons guidance activities.

These are just a few of the many Special Task Forces of the country. So imagine the protection we enjoy!

These guys who take up and take over the main defense branches are highly skilled in sophisticated warfare and are called upon only when the situation gets out of hand.

‘Gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder’ said Chesterton. That just about sums up what we feel for these unsung heroes of India, doesn’t it?

We salute our real Heroes for their courage and sacrifices, for the country.
