An unidentified Saudi man opened fire and injured a male gynaecologist who helped his wife deliver a baby.

According to media reports, the assailant entered King Fahad hospital in Riyadh on Wednesday on the pretext of meeting and thanking the doctor who had delivered the baby.

Dr Muhannad Al Zabn, a Jordanian national, had delivered the baby nearly a month before. He met the man in the hospital’s garden, and during the conversation the newborn’s father removed a concealed gun and opened fire at the doctor.

Hearing the gunshots, the doctor’s co-workers rushed to the spot and admitted him to the emergency wing. He was later shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The unidentified assailant was arrested. He reportedly justified his actions claiming that the male doctor had no right to deliver the baby and that a female gynaecologist should have assisted.

The hospital’s spokesperson Bassam Al Buraikan confirmed that the doctor’s condition was stable.
