Shocking suicides that shook the Indian entertainment industry
24-year-old TV actress Pratyusha Banerjee was found hanging by the ceiling fan in her flat in Mumbai after her relationship with her boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh had allegedly turned sour.
We look at some of the most shocking suicides over the years that shook the entertainment industry.
1. Jiah Khan: Even after a smashing debut opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the film Nishabd, her career failed to take off. Failed relationships, an abortion and acute depression took a toll on the 25-year-old actress and she hanged herself in her flat. She left a 6-page suicide letter accusing her boyfriend Sooraj Pancholi of torture and infidelity.
2. Divya Bharti: The actress rose to stardom with films such as Vishwatma and Deewana, but the fame was short-lived. Divya was found dead after she fell from the balcony of her fifth floor flat when she was only 19 years old. While some say that she was pushed by an unknown man, others suspect that she committed suicide as her marriage with producer Sajid Nadiadwala had fallen apart.
3. Viveka Babaji: The model rose to fame through her Kamasutra ad. After her debut film Ye Kaisi Mohabbat Hai failed at the box office, she unsuccessfully attempted to make her mark in the south Indian film industry. A dipping career, a failed relationship with her boyfriend Gautam Vora and piling financial losses forced Viveka to take the extreme step. She destroyed everything in her house before hanging herself.
4. Kuljeet Randhawa: 29-year-old Kuljeet was at the peak of her career when she hanged herself in her flat in Mumbai. She was known for her roles in popular TV shows such as Hip Hip Hurray and Special Squad. She left her boyfriend Bhanu Uday a suicide note explaining her inability to cope with life’s pressures.
5. Nafisa Joseph: Popular VJ and ex Miss India committed suicide weeks before her marriage to the businessman Gautam Khanduja. According to her parents, she took the drastic step after the marriage was called off as she discovered that Gautam was already married.
6. Shikha Joshi: Shikha shot to fame with the critically acclaimed film BA Pass. Failing to find successful work thereafter she plunged into depression. She slit her throat in the bathroom of her rented flat.
7. Parveen Babi: The yesteryear’s Bollywood diva suffered from psychological problems and repeated mental breakdowns. After a successful career which spanned over a decade, she spent the last few years of her life alone in Mumbai. The actress was found dead in her flat after she’d reportedly starved herself to death.
