Sridevi’s Tamil films you simply must watch
Sridevi’s latest film, Mom, is making waves for her performance. Long before she became a Bollywood star, Sridevi was a top-ranked heroine in Kollywood films. Here are some of her best, a vintage collection.
16 Vayathinile: The actress who began her Kollywood career as a child artiste, announced her arrival as a mature performer in this classic by Bharathiraja. She played Mayil, a village girl who is lured by an exploitative man and later finds solace with Chappani, a slow, but devoted man, a character considered one of Kamal Haasan’s best.
Moondru Mudichu: This was one of Balachander’s most acclaimed films. Sridevi, Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan starred in the film that explored the complexity of relationships. All three stars pulled off brilliant performances in the film.
Sigappu Rojakkal: This thriller, directed by Bharathiraja, saw Sridevi pull off another top performance as a young woman who’s on the verge of becoming the victim of a serial killer. Kamal Haasan was cast opposite her.
Varumayin Niram Sigappu: The film about unemployment, with its communist undertone, was critically acclaimed and one of Balachander’s best. Sridevi and Kamal Haasan teamed up again in the film, playing star-crossed lovers. The beautiful Sippiyirukkudhu song from the movie keeps it alive even today.
Moondram Pirai: The movie that was remade as Sadma in Hindi has Sridevi playing a young woman who has lost her memory. Both she and Kamal Haasan came up with award-winning performances in the film that had a tragic ending.
Johnny: Sridevi and Rajnikanth were also a hit pair of the ‘80s. This film saw them match skills and was also known for its lilting songs.
