The Telangana government will sell organic vegetables, fruits and spices at reduced prices to protect the consumers and farmers’ interests. The state government already sells milk, milk products and edible oils under the brand ‘Vijaya’.

The state government will set up the Telangana State Horticulture Corporation in order to encourage organic farming. The state cabinet approved the proposal earlier last month. “We have identified land at Mulugu in Medak district for setting up a food park. Fruits, vegetables and spices will be processed and packed here,” Telangana’s agriculture minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said.

The state government believes that home-grown organic products will protect the consumers from pesticide coated vegetables and fruits that come from the other states. Spices such as cloves, turmeric, ginger, red chilli powder, cumin seeds and others will be sold under the ‘Telangana’ brand through special outlets. .

In the recent months, the state government has effectively increased inspection on fruit vendors in the cities—especially Hyderabad. Several fruit stalls were earlier raided and the authorities found that traders use chemicals like calcium carbide to ripen fruits artificially.
