The most OMG Oscar moments ever

The Annual Academy Awards may be about recognising the best in the business. The Oscars are equally about acceptance speeches – the blah and the brilliant – tears, on-stage antics and how can we forget the debates that rage over the red carpet gowns. We bring you the most memorable, absurd, hilarious and what-were-they-thinking moments from recent Oscars. That moment when…

Ellen de Generes clicked the mother of all selfies

Host of the 2014 Oscars Ellen de Generes pulled off a coup, squeezing so much star power into one frame you needed shades just to look at it. Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o and brother Junior who was her date, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep and Jared Leto and Ellen featured in her selfie. The photo she tweeted became the most-tweeted one of the time.

Brad Pitt was seen eating pizza at the Oscars

It was Ellen who managed another first at the Oscars, ordering pizza for the stars during the awards ceremony. The pizza delivery boy from the Big Mama’s and Papa’s pizzeria got a $ 150 tip for his troubles.

Jennifer Lawrence managed to fall, twice

Jennifer Lawrence fell down the stairs while going up for her Best Actress Award for her role in Silver Linings Playbook in 2013. She laughed it off in good humour. But collectors of Oscar trivia did a double take when she repeated the act, tripping over while alighting from her limo at the 2014 Oscars.

Halle Berry made a moving, inspiring speech

Halle Berry’s acceptance speech  after she won the Best Actress award for Monster’s Ball in 2002 is probably one of the most powerful and moving in recent times. She said, “This moment is so much bigger than me. This is for every nameless, faceless woman of colour who now has a chance tonight because this door has been opened.” The only other black actress to be similarly awarded was Hattie McDaniel’s ‘Supporting Actress’ victory for Gone with the Wind 63 years before that.

Gwyneth Paltrow couldn’t stop sobbing

Some people were moved by Gwyneth Paltrow’s acceptance speech after she won Best Actress for Shakespeare in Love (1998). The actress wept inconsolably through her speech. Others thought it was way too weepy.  Either way, it was the most tears an actress has shed on stage.

Adrien Brody smooched the presenter

Adrien Brody, winner of the Best Actor Award for The Pianist in 2003, was so excited he threw caution to the winds and smooched presenter Halle Berry, smack on. ‘I bet they didn’t tell you that was in the gift bag,’ he told Berry.

Bjork came dressed as a swan

The Scandinavian singer’s outfit easily makes it to the list of most bizarre Oscar dresses. But Bjork didn’t seem to mind at all, as she walked down the red carpet in this swan dress in 2001.

The usually sexy Uma Thurman turned frumpy

Uma Thurman is an actress with an electric oomph quotient. But she got it all wrong at the 2004 Oscars in this white outfit that seemed to be made of curtains and held together by an afterthought of a belt. Even her lovely legs didn’t manage to salvage the look.

When Celine Dion got it so wrong

Did she dress in the dark? is all that we feel like asking whenever we see photos of this 2004 Oscar turnout by Celine Dion. This one’s a permanent fixture on Oscar fashion disasters.

Ben Stiller came as an Avatar

Remember Ben Stiller presenting the award for Best Make-Up at the 2010 Oscars? He came made up as an Avatar and spoke Na’avi. How cool was that!
