She has seen success as an actress, but has had flops in equal measure. But Charmy Kaur is a tough gal and keeps at it quite determinedly.

Next up, the actress is set to star in ‘Jyothi Lakshmi’, directed by ‘Pokiri’ Puri Jagannath.

Watch the first look of this film, launched last week, and read about what makes Charmy different from other heroines in Tollywood.

Housewife act at 15

Charmy made her acting debut in ‘Nee Thodu Kavali’ in which she played the role of a housewife at the age of 15. Though the film did not do particularly well, Charmy began to be recognised in the South for her acting talents.

A southern star

After ‘Nee Thodu Kavali’, Charmy acted in a few Malayalam and Tamil films before returning to the Telugu industry. Her big break came with ‘Gowri’, in which she was paired with Sumanth.

Though she has predominantly worked in the Telugu industry, Charmy has also acted in Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi ventures. Her Hindi movies include ‘Bbuddah… Hoga Terra Baap’, ‘Zila Ghaziabad’ and ‘R… Rajkumar’.

Acting with top stars

Charmy has acted opposite many top stars, including Ravi Teja, Nagarjuna, Jr NTR, Vikram, Upendra, Prabhas and Mohan Babu. After several average films, the success of Nagarjuna’s ‘Mass’ reinforced her position in the Telugu industry. In the meantime, she took a different route, playing several heroine-oriented roles.

Heroine-oriented films

Charmy is known for her woman-oriented films, including ‘Anukokunda Oka Roju’, ‘Mantra’, ‘Manorama’, ‘Kavya’s Diary’, ‘Sye Aata’ and ‘Mangala’. Of these, ‘Anukokunda Oka Roju’ was her most critically acclaimed film, while ‘Mantra’ fetched her the Nandi Award for Best Actress.

Horrors and thriller movies

Of her female-lead movies, ‘Mantra’ and ‘Mangala’ are suspense horror movies, while ‘Pratighatana’ and ‘16 Days’ are thrillers.

Variety of roles

Though not a trained classical dancer, Charmy attempted Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi dances in Pournami, which won her much appreciation.

In ‘Prema Oka Maikam’ she played the role of a call girl, in ‘Manorama’ she is a lip reader, while in ‘Pratighatana’, she played a journalist.

Item numbers

Charmy’s item numbers are famous in Tollywood. She has danced to special songs in big budget films such as ‘Dhamarukam’, ‘Naayak’, ‘10 Enradhukulla’ and ‘Ragada’.
