This Chennai-born rapper’s protest video disses Unilever for making Kodaikanal a ‘toxic shit’

While Kodaikanal is still nursing the wounds that it got from mercury poising, Chennai-born rapper Sofia Ashraf calls out to Unilever’s CEO Paul Polman whose hypocrisy has cost the residents dear.

Located in Tamil Nadu, it is often dubbed as the Princess of Hill Stations. But now it is laden with ‘toxic shit’ as Sofia calls it. Taking a cue from Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda, the artiste talks about how toxic mercury waste has taken a heavy toll on their lives and how Unilever has failed to compensate for the damage it has caused over years.

The story harks us back to 1982 when a mercury thermometer plant owned by Ponds was moved from the United States to India. Today, it is one of the major toxic pollution cases in the world.

Sofia has done a commendable job by bringing issues like corporate liability and corporate accountability to the fore.
