TN govt. confirms meteorite crash in Vellore

Tamil Nadu government confirmed meteorite landing in Vellore on Saturday. The object which had crash landed on the premises of Bharatidasan engineering college in Vellore on Saturday had left one dead and three seriously injured.

On Sunday Tamil Nadu chief minister Jayalalithaa quoted expert examinations to confirm that the object was a meteorite.

“A mishap occurred yesterday when a meteorite fell in the campus of a private engineering college in Vellore district’s K Pantharappalli village…,” Indian Express quoted Jayalalithaa’s press statement on Sunday.

Though it initially was suspected to be bomb explosion, investigations by forensic and bomb experts ruled out such speculations.

It was reported that window panes of the college building and buses were shattered after the meteorite fell. According to local reports, the meteorite was seen crash landing with a loud explosion.

Kamraj, a bus driver in the college who was in close proximity of crash site during the incident succumbed to injuries later.

Chief minister Jayalalithaa declared a solatium of Rs one lakh to the family of Kamraj. Three gardeners of the institution were also injured following the incident. A cash compensation of Rs 25,000 was also announced for the treatment of each of the injured.

According to college authorities, none of the students were affected by the meteorite.
