Top 10 actors of Bollywood in 2015

This year was a year of the Khans as well as of the young guns – with some predictable big blockbusters from the likes of Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan but also some strong performances by Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan. Here are this year’s top actors in no particular order:
1. Salman Khan had another good year at the box office this year with his roles as Bajrangi in Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Prem in Prem Ratan Dhan Paiyo leaving his producers laughing all the way to the bank. His continuing stint on TV with Bigg Boss 9 also cemented his role as the most bankable star in media right now.

2. Ranveer Singh was clearly the actor on a roll this year with strong performances as Kabir Mehra in Dil Dhadakne Do, and Peshwa Bajirao in Bajirao Mastani. He has officially become the young turk to watch out for with his power-packed, energetic characters – and was lauded for a authentic portrayal of Bajirao in the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film.

3. Amitabh Bachchan stole the show as the constipation obsessed Bhaskor Banerjee in Piku – it was a role that was written for a strong performer and he certainly pulled off a quixotic and hypochondriac character in all its eccentricities!

4. Irrfan Khan has had another year of powerful roles in Bollywood films balanced by strong cameos in international films. While his stint as Yohaan the Inspector in Jazbaa was a miss, he was phenomenal as Rana Chaudhary who runs a taxi business in Piku, as well as the CBI office Arun Kumar in Talvar. He also continued to catch our eye in billion dollar franchise movies by playing Simon Masrani, CEO of the Masrani Corporation and the owner of Jurassic World in Jurassic World!

5. Shahrukh Khan had one big release this year playing Raj/ Kali in Dilwale and this Rohit Shetty film did good business but it was critically panned. Fans who were expecting nostalgia from the Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge pairing of Kajol and Shahrukh in this film were left cold. However Shahrukh has an even bigger year coming up with Fan and Raees – and his fans cannot wait to see those films.

6. Ranbir Kapoor played the eponymous Roy in Roy, Johny Balraj in Bombay Velvet, and Ved in Tamasha and two of those three were total duds despite spirited performances by him. Tamasha was the one film that redeemed his box office performance this year and it was also appreciated by critics. Kudos to him for reversing what seemed like a downward trend this year.

7. Saif Ali Khan played another spy as Daniyal Khan in Phantom directed by Kabir Khan and while the film didn’t exactly set the box office on fire it was not the utter flop that Agent Vinod was – keeping this Khan in the race for a little while longer.

8. Varun Dhawan had a good year – from his roles as Veer in Dilwale, Suresh in ABCD2, Raghu in Badlapur. He had possibly the best start to the year with his intense, and eerie depiction of a man consumed by revenge in Badlapur which showcased him in a totally different avatar as well. Veer in Dilwale was the mainstream role that keeps Varun in the spotlight as a younger generation actor to watch out for – in the fight to take on the mantle of the aging Khans.

9. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is another actor whom the critics love to love, like Irrfan Khan and this year he did not disappoint with his performances as Dashrath Manjhi in Manjhi the Mountain Man, Chand Nawab in Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and his award worthy role as Liak Tungrekar in Badlapur. The highlight of the film is when Nawaz actually makes the despicable murderer worthy of our sympathy through his bravura performance.

10. Sushant Singh Rajput is the star to watch out for – even though he had just one film this year and played the titular character in Detective Byomkesh Bakshi. The film may not have clicked but the dhoti clad Sushant certainly made an impression and has screen presence to ensure his forthcoming films are anticipated.
