Rajya Sabha’s 10-member ethics committee, headed by senior Congress leader Karan Singh, unanimously agreed to expel the beleaguered business tycoon Vijay Mallya from the Indian parliament’s Upper House.

The committee examined Mallya’s alleged loan default of Rs 9,400 crores to various banks and have given him a week’s time to respond. The Indian government on Sunday revoked Mallya’s passport. Mallya fled India on 2 March and is believed to be living in London.

Karan Singh said, “We have examined the entire issue related to Mallya’s case. The documents that we had sought from banks have also come. There was a unanimous view in the panel that he should be expelled from the House membership. But still we have decided to give him a week’s time to tell us whatever he has to say. The next meeting of the committee will be held on May 3, when we will take a final decision.”

According to media reports, the government’s toughest challenge would be to ensure the multi-crore loan defaulter’s deportation. Mallya’s a citizen of Britain since 1992. He even has voting rights in the country!
