It was an embarrassing situation in Uttar Pradesh, with farmers stealing Khaats (cots) that were laid out out on the mega stage for Rahul Gandhi’s first-ever Khaat Sabha.

Around 1,000 stringed cots were taken away on Tuesday by villagers attending a rally by Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who launched his Deoria to Dilli yatra to connect with voters ahead of next year’s assembly elections.

As soon Gandhi left the meeting that was held in Rudrapur Inter College ground, men, women and children all scampered, taking away the cots that laid out for them to sit on.

Gandhi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of ignoring farmers due to his bias towards the rich as he began a 2,500-km ‘Kisan Yatra’ in election-bound Uttar Pradesh. He said that the Prime Minister waive off loans of the rich, but did not do the same for farmers.

The Congress leader went on to urge the government to slash the electricity tariff by 50 percent and hike the minimum support price given to farmers’ produce.

Gandhi to cover 39 districts as well as 55 of the 80 Lok Sabha constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.

“Door-to-door campaign begins from village Pachladi. Met farmers and collected Kisan Maang Patras outlining their demands,” tweeted Gandhi.
