The union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari in a tweet said, “We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers.”

The optical illusions will be designed so as to appear like actual road blocks. This is meant to stop speeding motorists who ignore crosswalks and put others’ safety at risk. Reportedly, drivers will be able to spot these artistic barriers at a safe enough distance to avoid panic braking.

BGR reports that optical illusion crosswalks which were designed my two mother-daughter artists already exists on a highway in Ahmedabad. These 3 dimensional barriers will soon be tested on a couple of other highways and will be implemented across the country if successful. The concept already exists in China, Australia and a few other countries.

However, even if it fools the eye, a regular rider/driver may remember the location of the speed bumps and quickly get used to it eventually rendering the illusion ineffective. But the authorities in Ahmedabad believe that the trick has worked.
