In a shocking and shameful incident, a sessions court judge from Erode in Tamil Nadu issued a notice to one of his court subordinates questioning why she had refused to wash his family’s underwear.

D Selvam, a sub-judge at Erode’s sessions courts, sent the controversial memo to the office assistant Vasanthi who reportedly belongs to the dalit caste.

The ‘judge’ in the memo issued questions why the subordinate had refused to wash his family’s underwear. Selvam says that Vasanthi argued with him and ‘threw away’ the underwear when she was asked to wash them.

Selvam also cautions Vasanthi to reply within seven days to prevent punitive actions against her.

Vasanthi filed a response to the memo on February 4. Based on her response, it is evident that the 47-year-old Vasanthi was afraid of her superior as she went on to admit that ‘she was wrong’.

Fearing punitive action, Vasanthi said in her response that she would not repeat the ‘mistake’.

Prasanth Nair, Collector (Calicut), shared the news article and also refused to comment for fear of “contempt of underwear proceedings”.
