On Feb 10, this year, 57-year-old Sureshbhai Patel was body slammed onto the concrete pavement outside his son’s home in Madison, Alabama, by a police officer. The impact left him partially paralysed with virtually no movement in his arms and legs.

While the American and Indian media were up in arms at yet another instance of US police brutality, many questioned how being roughed up by a police officer could lead to such extreme injuries.

Well, here’s how: Footage recorded on a dashboard-mounted camera in the police car the officers arrived in shows just how violent the law enforcement agents were.

WARNING: Though the incident takes place a good 10 metres from the police car, the camera picks up the sickening sound of Sureshbhai Patel’s head hitting the ground.

Here’s the shocking incident, from a clearer, closer angle:

According to AL.com, Madison Police Department field trainer Eric Parker and trainee officer Andrew Slaughter were the officers involved in the incident. Parker, who slammed Patel to the ground, turned himself in to the police to face charges. He was arrested and released on bail.

Police chief Larry Muncey told reporters that Parker has been fired from his job.

“I found that Officer Eric Parker’s actions did not meet the high standards and expectations of the Madison City Police Department,” Muncey said.

Here’s the transcript of the conversation the officers had with Patel just before he was knocked to the ground by Officer Parker:

“What’s going on sir?”

“You what?”

“India.”

“Where you heading?”

“Where?”

“I can’t understand you, sir.”

“Where’s your address?”

“Do you have any ID?”

“India?”

“Do you live here.”

“Sir, sir, come here.”

“Do not jerk away from me again, or I will put you on the ground. Do you understand?”

At this point Officer Parker tackles Patel to the ground.

The Patel family lawyer, Hank Sherrod, has filed a suit in court against the police officer.
