Fishermen in the coastal regions were reported to be putting in efforts to push the whales back to sea.

‘Indian Express’ quoted PTI that top officials of fisheries department of Tamil Nadu state government have rushed to the spots were whales were seen and efforts to push the baleens into deepsea have already commenced.

While reasons for the phenomena are yet to be established, marine scientists told Indian Express that several reasons such as effects navy sonar or pollution could have caused it. However, officials refrained from asserting any speculations.

Studies underscoring the adverse effects of climate change and increase in ocean surface temperature on sea animals have come out recently. In August 2015, carcass of a 33-meter-long whale was ashore in Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu.
