Why Mani Ratnam’s ‘OK Kanmani’ trailer gets the thumbs up from us

The just-out trailer of Oh Kadhal Kanmani, shortened to OK Kanmani, takes Mani Ratnam fans on a 1.22-minute journey that somehow manages to capture the nostalgia of a decade and a half.

The film, releasing in April 2015, 15 years after Alai Payuthey, one of our all-time favourite love stories, promises to be another romance from the filmmaker who’s a master of the genre. And how we loved those! So, enough of films about good versus evil, like Kadal, and modern takes on the epics, like Raavan. Bring on the good old love story, we say.

The trailer gives us a glimpse of how the couple meet and it’s a signature Mani Ratnam moment. There’s also a train scene that consciously harks back to Alai Payuthey. Other vintage Mani Ratnam touches like the Mumbai skyline – which featured in Nayagan – are evident, too.

Dulquer Salman, who has established his credentials as romantic hero in films such as Bangalore Days, and the vivacious Nithya Menen, make a fabulous team. The next Madhavan-Shalini, maybe?

Watch the trailer and you’ll definitely be hoping for a good, old-fashion love story from Mani Ratnam.
