Why the ‘no heels, no entry’ dress code in Cannes is plain stupid
Granted Cannes is all about the glitz and the popping of flashbulbs. Still, denying women who aren’t wearing heels entry to the screenings is taking style to an absurd level, you’ll agree. What’s more, it’s sexist and stupid to insist that all women at the film festival should be teetering about in heels. Here’s why:
Flatgate gets flak
The ‘heels only’ dress code issue has quickly been christened #Flatgate and stars such as The Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt have lashed out at the absurdity.

Smacks of sexism
The heels controversy has also evoked cries of sexism. Twitter was abuzz with demands to make the rule apply to all. George Clooney in a pair of Blahniks maybe?

Why heels aren’t so good for you after all
Impossibly high heels have, over the decades, come to mean the ultimate in chic style and elegance. But commonsense dictates otherwise. And while fashion victims should be allowed to put up with the agony of heels, women who opt for comfort over style should surely be allowed to go about in flats. Too high heels can cause damage in the following ways:
-High pumps cause a painful knot at the back of the heel known as the pump bump.
– Ultra-high heel styles that put stress on the ball of the foot can inflame the bones in that area or the nerves that surround them.
– All high heels come with the risk of ankle sprains. Stiletto-wearers are particularly prone to sprains.
– Platform heels that are too high may look safe but can interfere with the biomechanics of walking.
So, thinking of slipping into those flats, are you?
