In a rare case, a 26-year-old woman gave birth to conjoined twins in Mumbai. Reportedly, the babies share all vital organs except the brain and spinal cord.

The babies weigh 4.5 kilograms and were delivered in the Sion civic hospital in Mumbai on Wednesday.

According to reports that appeared in The Indian Express, a CT scan and MRI revealed that the twin boys share a heart, a set of kidneys, a liver, an abdomen and a pelvis. It was also learned that the lungs were found only in one of the boys.

However, the hospital authorities plan to separate the boys.

“When they are asleep, we will pinch each limb to check which baby wakes up or reacts. Based on our understanding of whether one baby has all sets of limbs intact, we will proceed to separate him from the second,” the head of pediatric surgery Dr Paras Kothari was quoted by The Indian Express.

The hospital authorities have confirmed that the mother’s twins Shahin Khan is stable and recuperating. The father of the babies Irshad Khan works as a cobbler at the Dadar station.
