Young girl succumbs to heatwave in parched Maharashtra

A 12-year-old girl from a district called Beed in the drought-hit state of Maharashtra succumbed to sunstroke on Tuesday. Reportedly, the girl was out in the scorching heat to collect water.

According to an NDTV report, Yogita Desai did four rounds from her home to the nearest water pump which was nearly half a kilometer away. The temperature was as high as 42 degree Celsius in the district. Yogita collapsed as she ventured out the fifth time. “Schools were closed, so she went to fetch water in order to help us as we are facing extreme water scarcity,” ANI quoted a close relative of the deceased girl.  

According to the doctors, dehydration and the resultant cardiac arrest led to her death. Reportedly, the girl was also suffering from dysentery.

As per statistical data available with the government of Maharashtra, close to 33 crores of people from 2.5 lakh villages are reeling under the severe drought conditions.

Beed is one many worst parched regions in the state.
