A turf cutter in Ireland found a massive 100 kilogram lump of butter reportedly buried in an Irish marsh land. This lump is said to be 2000 years old and is still edible.

Jack Conway, a turf cutter from Maghera in northern Ireland, discovered the prehistoric dairy product which according to him ‘smelled like cheese’.

It is speculated that the butter may have been buried to preserve it, but experts claimed it could have been an offering to the gods so that they might keep that area safe.

It was unearthed in the Drakerath area which is believed where the boundaries of three ancient counties met.

“These bogs in those times were inaccessible, mysterious places. It is at the juncture of three separate kingdoms, and politically it was like a no-man’s-land – that is where it all hangs together. Theoretically the stuff is still edible – but we wouldn’t say it’s advisable,” was quoted by The Irish Times.

The worker had found the butter lump nearly 12 feet below the ground before he reported it to the Cavan County Museum.

According to reports similar discoveries are common in parts of Scotland and Ireland.
