Kerala’s veteran communist party leader V S Achuthanandan will visit students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in Delhi which is currently witnessing one of the biggest student agitation movements in the history of universities in India.

During his visit to JNU on Wednesday, VS is expected to meet the students and faculty there, who have been put on the defensive for lionising 2001 parliament attack accused Afzal Guru. Afzal Guru was hanged by the Indian state in 2013.

However, the supreme court which sentenced Afzal to death had underscored a lack of ‘direct’ evidence against him and ruled to hang him for appeasing the collective conscience of the nation.

The celebration of Afzal Guru’s execution anniversary by the students in JNU campus on February 9 had led to the arrest of student union leader Kanhaiya Kumar on charges of seditious sloganeering against the country.

According to reports, VS who is in Delhi to attend party’s central committee meeting will visit the JNU students.

The act by the students have been widely perceived as a wilful act to evoke anti-India sentiments and to condone pro-secessionist Afzal Guru who advocated the separation of Kashmir from India.
