The Kollywood releases are an intrinsic part of Pongal festivities for the Tamil film audiences. This year, there’s quite a treat in store with some big-ticket films hitting the screens.

Rajini Murugan

In recent times VJ-turned-film actor Sivakarthikeyan has established himself as a bankable star. In Rajini Murugan he teams up again with Ponram, the director with whom he made Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, a comedy that went on to become a box-office success. Rajini Murugan, too, promises to be packed with laughs with a rustic touch. The film stars Keerthi Suresh as Sivakarthikeyan’s love interest and also features veterans like Rajkiran and Samuthirakkani. Music is by D. Imman.

Kathakali

Vishal, who made waves with the Nadigar Sangam elections last year, starts off 2016 with a Pongal release. Kathakali has been billed as an action thriller and Vishal, it is learned, is breaking away from the on-screen image he has portrayed so far. In the film, he shares screen space with Catherine Treasa. Kathakali has been directed by Pandiraj of Pasanga fame. The director has said he even edited out the comedy portions from Kathakali to keep the script tight. So, fans can expect and edge-of-the-seat-experience.

Gethu

Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Gethu also makes it to the screens this festive season. The film has been described as a crime thriller and is directed by Thirukkumaran, who earlier made Maan Karate.  Cast opposite Udhayanidhi is Amy Jackson, who’s now in the news for having bagged a role in Enthiran 2. Music for Gethu, produced by Red Giant movies, is by Harris Jayaraj who has worked on other Udhayanidhi films before.

Tharai Thappattai

This is a Bala film after a fairly long gap; his last was the award-winning Paradesi in 2013. The director, who has always chosen off-beat themes and characters for his films, has set Tharai Thappattai against the backdrop of Karagattam, the folk art. Music for the film is by Ilayaraja who will be scoring for his 1000th project. Sasikumar, a Bala protégé, plays the lead in the film and shares screen space with Varalakshmi Sarathkumar. This is probably going to be the film that wins most critical applause amongst the Pongal releases.
