People who grew up in the late 80s and the 90s may not forgotten the days when they used to run to VCR tapes renting shops. There were even shops which used to lend the VCR players to those who didn’t have one at homes.

Today, almost over 20-years after VCR players gave way to later technologies like VCD, DVD, Blu-Ray and to the latest – streaming devices, the last remaining VCR company – Funai Electric based out in Japan is shutting down the production of the retro video-playing device.

Yes. That raises a very surprising question.

Did VCR players actually manage to stick around all these years?

It was there apparently.  And Funai Electric is going to throw towel over the production modules by August end.

Funai Electric is having trouble getting the parts it needs and suffering from  lower and lower sales. According to the sales statistics released by the company, only 7,50,000 VCR players were only sold last year. In the past the company used to sell as many as 15 million pieces every year.
