Researchers claim that a key ingredient in beer can be used to cure cancer.
According to a research paper, hops—which gives beer its distinctive bitter taste—may surprisingly have the ability to halt bacterial growth and disease. They contain acids called humulones and lupulones that scientists hope to convert to drugs.
Researchers from the University of Idaho aim to extract the compounds so as to recreate them in the lab. According to the Hindustan Times, researcher Kristopher Waynant said that his team was “very close” to achieving this after a lot of “trial and error”.
Kristopher hopes to collaborate with biologists and medical researchers to develop active agents for pharmaceuticals to treat cancers or inflammatory diseases.
The study would be presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society.
