Beware Mumbaikars, breaking traffic rules might end up in you being served a e-challan over SMS. Yup, CCTVs installed in the city will now keep a watchful eye over the Mumbai streets for traffic violations.

“There is no need for you to look for a traffic constable at junction before breaking traffic rules. Our cameras will click you in the act,” said Mumbai police commissioner Datta Padsalgikar.

The installed cameras will live stream footage back to the control room, where a team of personals will detect any violation.

The superior quality cameras will allow the police to zoom in on number plates

and get clear pictures. The police will then use the registration number to find the violator’s mobile number and send the challan via SMS.

The police will maintain a record of vehicle numbers and send notifications in case of unpaid fines. The traffic department will act sternly on repeat offenders and those who have not payed their penalties.

“If a motorist commits more than four offences, we will request the RTO to suspend the license,” said Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of police, traffic.
