Opinion: Empty vessels make the most noise and our parliament leaders just proved that!

It’s ironic that our leaders are able to laugh at themselves! When the Rajya Sabha Chairman announced that a delegation from Bhutan is on a visit to India to learn more about Indian culture, its people and the functioning of the Parliament, there was a burst of laughter. How ineptly they laugh at themselves!

After the introduction, the floor was thrown open for questions. The Opposition team created such a ruckus. These leaders didn’t think it was necessary to listen to the Chairman. He seemed to be non-existent to them.

And then came the worst part. They begin hooting, displaying posters, and shouting slogans such as, “Modi baba, mooh kholo, mooh kholo.” The honourable Chairman tried his best asking them to stop it, but they were in no mood to refrain. The chaos left him with no other option but to adjourn the House.

And, guess this is  what the delegation will learn about the Indian Parliament!

Dear Leaders,

Just to remind you the place that you stand is the Indian Parliament. It’s a place to discuss about our country, its people, its development. If you have something to object, can you please do so in a law abiding manner? Can you please put forth valid arguments? Can you think about how we can improve the country? How we can make “acche din” a reality?

By merely disrupting the Parliament, you are wasting our money. Just to remind you, the people of India are paying taxes so that the leaders would come together for the sake of development of the country, not that you can enjoy a good meal at the Parliament canteen after creating the ruckus and go home patting your tummy.

We, the common man, too want to vent out. But calling the government names, like chorusing Modi Baba, will neither benefit the Parliament nor the mass.  Having said that, we can understand why the Opposition is playing the “Lalit Gate” card.

Do you care about the people affected by the flood in the North East? Do you know the status of the relief operations? Do you know what is the current state of the public healthcare system and what is being done about it? Do you even know how malnutrition and lack of sanitation is taking a toll on the country’s economy?

Can you ask the ruling party these questions as well? Can you follow up on these questions until there’s action on the ground?

While you are busy laughing at yourself, your unruly behaviour has been made a joke and spoofed too. You never seem to be ashamed of your deeds.  But we do!

Yours truly,

A concerned Indian citizen
