A  22-year-old woman was thrashed in Pune by 5 assailants allegedly for wearing a short dress and “roaming” with two male friends. What’s worse is that the police refused to take her seriously when she turned to them.

NDTV reports that the incident occurred on 1 May. The woman was returning from a sangeet rehearsal for her friend’s wedding with her two male friends at 5.30 a.m. At the Lullanagar main signal, a car with tinted windows drove past theirs, rolled down the window and peeped inside.

The 5 men in the car followed them all the way back home, dragged her out and beat her. When her friends tried to intervene they too were beaten. They left and returned 15 minutes later with 15 others and threatened her again with sticks and rods.

The victim called 100 but in vain. She eventually managed to reach the police who arrived at the scene an hour later. The police filed an NC (non-cognisable) complaint but did not take the incident seriously. After several trips to the Kondhwa Police Station, she finally managed to file a proper case.

Two of the accused men Amit Mukhedkar and Shubham Gupta have been arrested, while the other three remain unidentified. The police did not comment on their delay in filing a proper case.
