Twins born to a mother—but from two different fathers

A man from Vietnam’s Hòa Bình province conducted DNA tests on his newborn twins only to find out that one of them is not his child. The man’s relatives, reportedly, insisted that he conduct the test on the infants as they did not share similar physical characteristics—one of them has thick wavy hair and the other has straight hair.

Though a rare phenomenon, Centre for Genetic Analysis and Technology lab in Hanoi confirmed that the infants were born from two different fathers. The babies were born on the same day and were of the same sex.

“This is rare not only for Vietnam, but for the world,” president of the Genetic Association of Vietnam, Le Dinh Luong told The Guardian.

Experts believe that such a phenomenon—called Heteropaternal Superfecundation—can occur only when eggs of a woman are fertilized by two men in a short period.

Such a case was last reported in New Jersey in 2015. The Turkish media too had reported a similar case in 2010.
