Uttar Pradesh’s reputation of being unsafe for women continues, with over thousand rape cases reported in the last 5 months. This shocking numbers were revealed by the Akhilesh Yadav government in the UP Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) on Tuesday (Aug 23).

1,012 cases of rape and 4,520 of harassment were reported in the past 5 months, the government stated in the house. In effort to curb such incidents, crime branch has arranged additional security measures in every district. Crime hotspots are being identified using web-based crime mapping and effective patrolling said the government.

This bit of assurance may prove be underwhelming, since raise in rape cases have tripled between 2014 and 2015 as per the statistics of the UP State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB).

The gang-rape in Bulandshahr grabbed national headlines whereas similar cases in Guragaon and Delhi do not get highlighted,” he said.

“According to media reports, it’s as if anyone who goes out on the street would be looted,” he added.

According to the NCRB 2014 report, India has recorded an increase of 65% in rape cases from 2010 (22,172) to 2014 (36,735), while UP recorded an increase of 121% from 2010 (1,563) to 2014 (3,467).
