Vikram is an actor who likes to push his boundaries. Even from his early films, he’s displayed a fondness for experimental roles and looks to match. His next project, Irumugan, sees him get even more adventurous.

Sethu is the film that put Vikram on the road to success in Kollywood and in it he played an inmate in a mental asylum, shaving his head and reducing his body to skin and bones. Pithamagan, which won him a National Award for Best Actor, also saw him take on a look that was completely new to the Tamil screen.

In his recent Ai, he played a bodybuilder who is then disfigured by a degenerative disorder and won applause for his effort and dedication, even if the film didn’t quite bowl the critics over.

In Irumugan, his next, Vikram is playing a double role. One is of a RAW agent and the other is a path-breaking role as a transgender. At a time when the rights and treatment of sexual minorities are the subject of raging debates, it will be interesting to see how Vikram pulls this one off in the film being directed by Anand Shankar, who previously made Arima Nambi.

The buzz is that Vikram is spending a lot of time studying the body language, mannerisms and psychology of transgender people.
