Indian Military Academy, a synonym for discipline, took the strictest disciplinary action yet against its under-training gentlemen cadets.

As many as 16 of the spring 2016 batch were ordered to redo the six-month course for beating up their juniors and taking offensive photographs.

According to Times of India (TOI), a senior official at the academy confirmed that the cadets were demoted to the following junior course as they violated the academy’s standing orders displaying indiscipline.

The cadets would now pass out of the academy in December this year instead of June. According to TOI, an official said that the punishment is meant to send out a strong message.

The atmosphere at the Indian Military Academy has been tense since last week after 16 gentlemen cadets were informed that they had been demoted for improper conduct with their juniors.

It is not new for the academy to punish, but it was one of the rare instances when so many cadets were punished together.

An academy official told TOI, “There is zero tolerance for any indiscipline in the IMA.”

However, a senior cadet, on condition of anonymity, told TOI that the punishment was “unjustified”.

“Every year, juniors study under the mentorship of the seniors in the initial months. This is as per the academy’s traditions, and the mentors are allowed to give punishments to their juniors,” he alleged.
