Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union’s president Kanhaiya Kumar was denied entry into the University of Hyderabad (UoH) on Wednesday evening. Kanhaiya reached the university at 6 p. m. He briefly addressed the gathering at the university’s entrance and returned.

Kanhaiya travelled to Hyderabad by air and reached the city’s Shamshabad airport on Wednesday morning, where he was received by CPI leaders. He then travelled to the CR Foundation in Kondapur.

He also met with Rohith Vemula’s mother Radhika at the foundation’s premises in the evening. Kanhaiya reportedly touched Radhika’s feet and took her blessings, and vowed to fight to ensure that the Rohith Act is passed in the parliament so as to create the right atmosphere for students studying in universities.

Keeping in view of the students’ protest since Tuesday, the university had imposed prohibitory orders in the campus. Strong police security was in place in and around the campus after Kanhaiya expressed his wish to visit the university.

Kanhaiya was accompanied by the Communist Party of India (CPI) leaders. They reportedly pleaded with the police at the university’s entrance to allow Kanhaiya inside the campus. The deputy commissioner of police had also reportedly given Kanhaiya and 10 of his colleagues the permission to enter the university. But the police at the gates denied him entry.

In his speech at the university’s entrance, Kanhaiya said that the union government had created the JNU controversy only to hush up the issues that drove Rohith Vemula to commit suicide. He criticized the vice chancellor Appa Rao for denying him entry into the campus.
