Sunstroke claims 66 lives in Telangana, schools to let students go ahead of summer vacation

The Telangana government extended the summer holidays by a week for schools and colleges in the state in the light of the heatwave sweeping the state. According to media reports, more than 66 people have died due to sunstroke.

As per an order issued by the state director of school education Dr G Kishan, the summer vacations will now commence on 16 April as opposed to 24 April.

The temperature in some parts of the state soared to 45 degree celsius.

Dr Kishan’s order stated, “The department has reviewed the advisories issued by the disaster management agency on prevailing heatwave conditions in the state. Due to high day temperatures being recorded in the state and after taking feedback from district collectors and also considering the demand of parents, it has been decided to declare holidays for all schools functioning under government/ local bodies/ private managements from April 16.”

The Telangana government has asked all schools, including private English medium schools, to strictly adhere to the order. The state government warned the schools who don’t follow the summer holiday schedule mentioned in the order with stern consequences.

As per the private weather forecasting agency Skymet, the scorching heatwave is likely to continue for two more days in Hyderabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Rangareddy and Khammam.
