The Bollywood-Bicycle romance: Find out why the desi heart beats for the bicycle

Bollywood and bicycle move together like the wheel and the spokes. In those times when cycles covered major parts of your daily commute, the Hindi film industry had belted out many such songs, paying a tribute to this faithful two-wheeler.

While Dev Anand in Mana janab ne pukara nahin showed us how a cycle helps you to chase your playfully-angry girl, in Mein chali mein chali Saira Bano’s girlfriends, on their speeding cycles, asked you ‘why should boys have all the fun’ with great swag!

Dev Anand and his ladylove Mumtaz riding through the sunflower dotted streets and singing Ae maine kasam li was a perfect example that love did exist without having that posh sedan parked in your backyard.

The boy’s jeep romancing the girl’s cycle in Pukarta chala hun mein is the vehicles’ ultimate love story.

Then came the age of bikes, the big brother of bicycles. That didn’t made tinsel town ditch its love for cycles. These on-screen Romeos continued to choose their humble cycles to express their love.

While crooning Jaanu meri jaan, Amitabh Bachchan and Sashi Kapoor took out their tandem cycle to tail after their girls. Govinda and Juhi Chawla made it more ethereal trundling on the chandi-ki-cycle-with-sone-ki-seat , through some dreamy boulevard, packed with heavenly clouds.

Aamir Khan brought back our good old cycle days with his epic sporty film Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.

We bet you must have whistled to what the lover boy did in Raja ko Rani se pyar ho gaya song, while riding along with his beau. They also got married, and had an adorable son. and the dad took his son out on cycle rides, too. Remember, Tu mera dil, tu meri jaan, o, I love you daddy?

A moonstruck Anil Kapoor ditched his four-wheeler and instead burrowed a passerby’s cycle, decked it up with a basket full of serene white flowers while singing hosannas for his love in 1942: A Love Story.

In this Space Age, bicycles have charmed Bollywood so much so that even though luxe cars have become a reality in most of our lives,  the likes of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan or Amitabh Bachchan can’t seem to do away with a cycle in their movies.
