These 5 movies about Artificial Intelligence sure creep you out

Movies about Artificial Intelligence (AI) have been gaining a lot of popularity over the past few years, it has also managed to branch out into sub-genres such as horror and thriller. Some of these movies are pretty mind-blowing especially since we live in a world that is on the brink of creating highly advanced AI. Watching AI movies often make us think if it could actually be a reality soon. Well, once you watch these movies, you’ll probably consider the world a lot safer without self-aware machines.

1) Automata

After 99% of the human population has been reduced to ashes in a solar flare, intelligent robots help humans re-build society. These robots are governed by two protocols, they cannot harm any form of life, and they should not modify or repair any robots. In this post-apocalyptic setting there is not much technology and law and order in play. What’s left of the population are in constant civil conflict, usually against the robots. Jacq Vaucan (Antonio Banderas) plays an insurance investigator for ROC, the company that manufactures these robots, he spots a robot trying to repair itself and decides to track it down. His whole world goes haywire as the chase leads him deeper into the world of AI and politics, it even puts his life and the lives of his new born daughter and wife in danger. His only hope, a robot named CLEO, but is he a friend or a foe?

2) The Machine

This movie packs everything – politics, artificial intelligence, corrupt military personnel, computer engineers and a really hot cyborg chick who wants to be human. The Machine is centered on downloading brain scans from deceased or disabled soldiers and uploading them to a cyborg’s artificial intelligence. Vincent McCarthy (Toby Stephens) is a computer engineer who tries to create the perfect sentient cyborg that possesses superhuman strength and follows orders to the T, but things go athwart when the cyborg starts showing signs of regret after killing a human being, it starts to question its existence and when it finds out that it has no objectives, it starts to crave human wants. Love included! Will the robot be put down, or will it evolve and escape the facility?

3) Chappie

Imagine a child’s brain in an armor plated robot the size of a fully grown human being, that’s what Chappie is. This movie has a different take on artificial intelligence altogether, it doesn’t portray the AI as a manipulative threat, but as a human child who is growing up and learning new things. The story is about a young computer engineer Deon Wilson (Dev Patel) who designs an AI that has the ability to think like a human being, but it falls into a gangster’s hands where they teach it to be a gangster and go against the police and rival gangs. There is also a twist towards the end when the company that manufactures robots develops an overkill prototype. This is probably the first AI movie that has a very human touch to it. Half way through the movie you will start feeling a creepy sympathy towards the robot.

4) Transcendence

This movie is sure to creep the hell out of you. It is a sci-fi flick and most of the story comprises of scientific hypotheses that is way ahead in the future, but nonetheless, it’s gripping and spine chilling the way the movie is made. The story is centered on an extremely advanced AI developed by Will Castor (Johnny Depp), which cyber terrorists are threatening to take down. In an assassination attempt of Dr. Will Castor the assailants graze him with a poisonous bullet, hence rendering him unable to complete building the AI. Dr. Castor has only a few days to live with the poison slowly killing him, this is when he decides to do the unthinkable. He decides to upload his mind to the AI he was working on, he succeeds and what happens next is absolutely mind boggling. Nobody can say whether the entity is Dr. Castor or the AI developed by him, especially since the procedure failed when they tried it on a monkey. Upon uploading the monkey’s mind into the computer, it screamed continuously for 5 hours before it had to be shut down.

5) Ex Machina

We really don’t want to spoil the surprise of this movie, but it is a sick to the stomach AI thriller. The movie only has three characters throughout it, one is a computer genius who won a lottery to test an AI which his CEO developed, the other is the CEO who developed the AI and the third is the AI itself. Could it be the CEO testing the computer genius to replace him? Or could it be the AI that is testing the CEO? Maybe the computer genius is the AI and the AI is a human who is testing him. Wait a minute, or maybe the CEO has made himself into a cyborg AI and is testing himself. This movie has so many surprises, it will leave you as dazed as the end of Inception. A must watch!
