59-year-old Canadian man, Winston Blackmore has 27 wives and 145 children, but he surprisingly believes legalizing polygamy would threaten women’s rights.

Blackmore is the leader of a polygamist Mormon fundamentalist group in Canada and has been arrested twice for polygamy.

While addressing a crowd in Salt Lake City, he said that he was against legalizing polygamy,  because it would lead to exploitation of women.

Blackmore was arrested arrested in 2007, but the charges were dropped over concerns of how the special prosecutor was selected. He was again charged on accounts of polygamy in 2014, but a trial date has not been set yet.

Blackmore said that Canada had changed the definition of common-law marriages in order to prosecute him. He said he and his wives have remained friends. He continued saying that he had never courted any of the women and they had voluntarily approached him to become his wife.
