No, that poor little thirsty crow, which we read about in our story books, doesn’t have to struggle more to get some water. While hundreds of birds continue to succumb to lack of water every year, particularly in summer, this mobile application called Bird Tap is a great medium to help thirsty avian friends get some respite. This is an initiative taken by Surat-based animal welfare organization Prayas Team Environment Charitable Trust in collaboration with Humane Society International (HSI).

How you can be a part of this initiative?

The organization has set up water bowl distribution centres across the city that dole out water bowls for free. You can approach the nearest such centre to your place and get one for your birdie buddies. You can either place the bowl in a private (your balcony or rooftop) or a public place that is frequented by birds.

How does it work?

First you have to register with the app by providing your details, like name and mobile number. That will show provide you with the list of water bowl distribution centres across. You pick one. A unique token number is provided to you which helps you avail of the free-of-cost water bowl from the selected distribution centre.

These earthen bowls have a special cooling effect. They are made from a certain kind of soil that keeps the water cool even during scorching summer.

After getting the bowl, you have to place it, take its photo and upload the same to the app. While the display of information about the location of your ‘private’ pot will be restricted to you, whereabouts of ‘public’ pots will be divulged to others so that they too can fill the pots when they get dried up.

Launched in May, this application already has 3,500-odd users. Your pot is mapped on the app to ensure that no bird in the city has to fly more than 100 metres in search of water. The best thing about this Android-based app is it notifies the users when their pots need to be refilled.
