Remember Qandeel Baloch? She is the controversial social media celebrity that promised to strip if Pakistan beat India in the World T20 match. She has also had quite a few things to say about Indian PM Narendra Modi and SRK as well.
The 26 year old model was murdered by her own brother in what is being called a ‘honour killing’. Qandeel recently created a big controversy by posting pictures of herself alongside a Muslim cleric on social media.
Reportedly, the brother was upset by her controversial pictures and had threatened her about it.
Qandeel, fearing for her life had left Karachi to go to her parents’ house Punjab. The move proved futile, as she was strangled to death on the early morning of July 16.
The brother is allegedly on the run from the authorities. As per the provisions provided by Pakistani law, his crime can go unpunished, if he is pardoned by his kin. According to reports, over 1000 women lost their lives in Pakistan as a result of honer killing. Since most of these killings are done by people within the family, many of them get away with murder.
While many believed Qandeel Baloch’s behavior on social media was against the culture of Pakistan, she also was praised by many for challenging the social norms of a country.
