I stopped wearing a watch after I bought my first phone. Though occasionally I wear one, it is as an ornament to go along with a half-sleeve T-shirt. Now that the smartwatches are soon to be flooding into markets, do I fancy them? Not a bit. What do I do with a smartwatch when there is always a handy smartphone?

However, for the time being, I decided to see if there is something about the so called ‘smart’watch that would change my belief. Here are the five points I considered. Did these points really change my attittude towards smartwatches? I shall tell that later. Meanwhile, read why smartwatches are not really dumb, and comment if you are convinced.

  1. They save time

Smartphones make a lot of noise – Calls, SMSes and other notifications. How about having a quick glance at your smartwatch to know what a notification is about instead of searching for the phone? This way, you can easily decide on which notifications to attend to and which ones to ignore. In other words, smartwatches save time.

  1. They save battery

Smartphone display consumes major part of the battery. When the phone accompanies a smartwatch, you will use the smartwatch more, and its small screen does not consume much charge. This way, your handset lasts longer.

  1. Good with voice commands

Calling over a smartphone may not be an easy affair, but using virtual assistants, such as Apple’s Siri and Samsung’s S Voice, to find answers, dictate messages, notes and reminders can be exciting.

  1. Less intrusive

During a meeting or when on a date, it is insulting to be giving more attention to your 5-inch phablet than to the person before you. With a smartwatch, you can check notifications or inbox quickly and less intrusively.

  1. The health dimension

Smartwatches actually are a better replacement for your wearable health gadgets such as Nike Sportswatch. They will have pedometer, calorie counter, heart rate monitor and other features. As a health gadget, smartwatches are really in demand.
